Portable Video

Market Trends

Portable multimedia devices and mobile handsets are quickly moving towards supporting higher and higher levels of multimedia capabilities. This includes not only imaging capabilities, such as JPEG, but multi-standard video capabilities including new standards such as H.264 and VC-1. According to iSuppli, with Mobile Handset Display Shipments in 2006 amounting to 1.2 Billion Units, one can easily see the large opportunity that portable video devices can represent.

Video and audio for these types of devices share similar requirements, lowest possible power and small silicon footprint, end-product requirements often dictates the most suitable form of solution. For video, most portable devices need to support a fixed number of standards with resolutions up to D1 on potentially both decode and encode functions. For these applications, hardware centric solutions often offer a better solution, in terms of power and silicon area, than a programmable processor.

VeriSilicon Solutions

VZ.Video

VZ.Video is an end-to-end portable video SoC platform from VeriSilicon.  The complete solution is comprised of best-in-class video hardware and other optional blocks from VeriSilicon for a go-to-market platform for IC manufacturers.  System developers can chose from a number of multi-standard video decode/encode offerings, VZ.VideoDE and VZ.VideoRE, to meet their product requirements. Customers may also select from different processor offerings from VeriSilicon for audio processing and other system software.  VZ.Video can also incorporate other system blocks from V.SIPro for a complete video IC system.

All components are licensable from VeriSilicon for use in a customer’s silicon product and also available as part of VeriSilicon's complete ASIC turnkey service.

ZSP Processor
Cores from either the ZSP G1 or G2 processor family may be used to implement a fully software programmable solution for a number of resolutions. For example, the ZSP400 is easily capable of supporting simultaneous MPEG-4 Simple Profile and aacPlus decode, while the ZSP500 could be used for more advanced algorithms and to support up to CIF level resolutions. Greater resolutions may be supported via hardware acceleration and use of the Z.Turbo interface.
The ZSP core is available as synthesizable RTL and can be targeted at any foundry.  Along with the processor core, VeriSilicon offers a complete set of software development tools as well as hardware development tools to support early system prototyping.

Customer's can also work with VeriSilicon on a full service specification-to-silicon basis where the ZSP core can be made available as part of a bundle with other VeriSilicon IP and silicon services.

ZSP Software
Developed by a rich community of ZSP solution partners, VeriSilicon offers a comprehensive set of optimized software to accelerate our customer's time-to-market.  The following software modules are currently available on the ZSP architecture:

   H.264 baseline profile decode
   VC-1 simple/main profile decode
   MPEG-4 simple profile decode
   On2's VP6 and VP7 decode
   JPEG decode
